Argo F%*k yourself!

I love the Oscars - every year I enter a tipping competition and rarely does the quality of the film enter into the reasoning behind which films or actors I pick. I like to believe the Academy does play favourites, and sometimes that pans out with the right person or movie winning but usually it doesn't. Of course, I actually have nothing to substantiate this, and it's probably just the deluded ramblings of a bored non-Industry cinema lover who has no idea what she's talking about (and sour grapes), so no defamation suits please.

This year I am so disappointed that Argo won't win Best Picture, purely because of the other films it's up against. It's a really tough year.

If you haven't seen it, go. It's been running in the cinemas since August (this is another made up fact because I can't be bothered fact checking, but I think I saw it then). If you don't like Ben Affleck, still go. You won't mind, I promise. The support casting is great, and the film is a well made exercise in tension and menace with a historical 'doco' vibe. It's not, of course. Facts have been played with to make a better story (but would we really like the ending if Butch shot the Sundance Kid and then killed himself? Not quite the same appeal, Hollywood is Hollywood, and entertainment, not education is the primary purpose - actually making money might be the primary purpose but again, what do I know?)

It will win the consolation prize of screenplay or original score, but will miss the big one due to two more patriotic contenders.

Of course, I usually come last in the tipping. I am hoping in this case I am wrong. If you watch, think of me as the winner of Best Picture is announced. Will I be sitting at home cheering, or yelling 'Argo f%*k yourself!'

Do you care? Do you have favourites? Who will win?

  1. I have to admit that I haven't watched a movie in years. And years. I can't wait til the kids are in preschool and I can duck off for a sneaky couple of hours of popcorn, coke and choc top indulgence!

Must and shall. Excellent to see a good enough approach to post research!

PS PLEASE switch off the Captcha on your comments, it makes it so much harder to comment, but am persevering.

  3. Thanks for the 'review' !! I don't know if I have even heard of this movie - I hear of movies - think "That sounds really good - we must go and see it" and then forget all about it !!!!
I really should have a list in my diary and write them in there - and then get them out on DVD !
Have the best day and may the best movie win !!!

  4. I haven't seen Argo yet but am dying to! It has got some tough competition against it (was surprised Silver Linings was up there! Haven't seen it yet but didn't think Bradley Cooper was Oscar material).
I agree with you. I reckon they play favourites. And the fact the actors have to kind of "campaign" leading up to the big night. Totally OTT, me thinks.

  5. Arrrrr there are so many movies I want to GO and see (d'ya like what I did there??? hmmm??) The winners are always total rubbish and completely rigged. I just watch it for the dresses (to laugh at the bad ones), and in the hope that someone pulls a Gwyneth (who I quite love BTW) and starts blub blub blubbing) or gets really drunk and falls off the stage. Inappropriate in Hollywood? YES PLEASE. I am such a big and noble person.
But, truly, I think Ben Affleck is DAMN SMART and very intelligent to have pulled this movie together - producing, directing and acting. I want it to win. And i haven't even seen it. One day I'm gonna write a screenplay and get my arse up on that stage. HAHAHHAHA once I'm over my mid-life crisis. Migraine yesterday. Dearlirious today. My apologies. Call me Gwyneth.

    1. Love what you did there!!!!
On migraines, I only started to get them last year and I swear by nurofen migraine - thought it would just be normal nurofen that they were overcharging for by writing migraine on the box but it really works
*this is not a sponsored post but it should be given how many people I tell about how good it is. Show me the money, nurofen!!!!

    2. Oh no I'm SO with you there - they're GOLD on normal headaches for me (ummm … the kind that I have this morning…. from excessive imbibing … now - VANISHED!) but my kind of migraines are hemiplegic. No pain! weeeee but no function in half my body either. Hilarious at a school pick up. HAHAHHAHAHAh. HA. Funnily enough though, right before I conked out, I was telling the kindy teacher to stock her handbag full of Nurofen migraine as she was telling me about her shocking headache all day previously!!!! THEY. ARE. GOLD.

  6. I would love Les Mis to win, but its the only one of the contenders I've seen so I could be biased! As long a Anne Hathaway wins I'll be happy!

  9. Oh that's for the reminder Lydia so going to watch Argo this weekend! Maybe even tonight - I love the Oscars for the perve factor and you are right, the best man/person/film/woman doesn't usually win x
